Chapter 11 of Strategic Management: Creating Competitive Advantages outlines the strategic advantages of leaders establishing a learning organization. Learning organizations have many strategic advantages, including the capability of adapting to change, of fostering creativity, and of succeeding in extremely competitive industries. Learning organizations have multiple key elements, such as inspiring people with a purpose, empowering all of its employees, developing and distributing internal knowledge, collecting and integrating external knowledge, and enabling creativity while challenging the status quo. Grainger cultivates itself as a learning organization through structured training programs, its continuous improvement culture, and knowledge-sharing practices. Grainger offers several formal training programs to its employees, to ensure they are knowledgeable on the safety, compliance, and technical requirements of the industries they serve. Additionally, Grainger offers many of these trainings to its customers, to provide the same benefits to its customers(1). Grainger’s corporate culture utilizes the lean manufacturing principle of continuous improvement, as its operations are heavily dependent on lean problem-solving for and providing comprehensive root cause analysis to its customers. Grainger also consistently participates in knowledge-sharing practices across its business units(2). This approach further enables Granger to implement continuous improvement activities. It also can generate cost savings, by sharing best practices and sometimes internal resources. By intentionally positioning itself as a learning organization, Grainger is leveraging the strategic advantages of learning organizations.
