Chapter 5 of Strategic Management: Creating Competitive Advantages discusses the emerging competitive strategy of firms acting as platform markets. In a platform market, a firm acts as the bridge between the two types of platform users, the buyers and the sellers. The firms that are most successful as a platform market typically do not produce the products they sell. Instead, the platform firm facilitates the transaction between the buyers and the sellers. The platform firm develops a business that is attractive to both the sellers and the buyers, so that the firm is the go-to facilitator of their transactions. These platform markets often combine cost leadership and differentiation strategies to attain their competitive advantage in the market. Businesses such as Amazon and Etsy are well-known for being platform markets as online retailers. Grainger is also well-known for its platform market as an online business-to-business sales facilitator. Grainger was founded in 1927, and it originally functioned as a supplier for businesses with only brick and mortar stores. In 1995, Grainger launched its grainger.com website with an electronic catalog. Eventually, as technology developed, its website was updated to become the eCommerce platform market that it is known as today. As Grainger provides significant value for its buyers through its extensive product selection, products being readily available, technical expertise and support, and fast shipping, buyers are willing to pay a premium to participate in Grainger’s platform market. Sellers are attracted to list their products for sale with Grainger, as Grainger provides them access to an extensive network of buyers and Grainger handles customer support services, returns, and inventory management. These differentiation strategies are so effective and valuable to buyers and sellers that Grainger does not have to leverage always being a cost leader to attract and retain buyers and sellers.
